Long Live Liverpool

Posted by Martin Hutchings on

…Living in London, it’s easy to forget what life’s like outside the realms of Zones 1 and 2. But if you fancy branching out, head North for the time it takes to reach work on a Monday morning and you’ll find yourself in a city full of excitement, innovative design and musical heritage. Voted Europe’s Capital of Culture in 2008, Liverpool’s diverse and vibrant atmosphere hasn’t gone unnoticed. But like all great cites, much of it’s history remains and the fabled ‘Liver birds’ of times gone by still stand tall, guarding over city and sea…

…At the heart of Liverpool and it’s economic regeneration lie the Albert Docks. Once at the centre of the city’s trading links with the rest of the world, it’s now home to a range of museums, restaurants and shops including the Tate Liverpool…

…While you’re at it, remember to take a stroll alongside the river and for those of you feeling the love - lock a padlock to the riverside railings and throw away the key, public fixtures of your eternal love (warning - act is irreversible)…

…Feeling more adventurous, follow the Mersey’s path into the Irish sea and find ‘Another Place’. Featuring the work of internationally renowned artist Anthony Gormley, Crosby Beach is a beautiful and intriguing spectacle, well worth a visit…

…as is Lark Lane, a lively and bohemian street littered with boutiques, artisanal cafes, bistros and bars. Located just outside of the city centre and stemming off Sefton park, Lark Lane caters for all and has plenty to offer, especially for the coffee lovers amongst you - check out ‘The Moon and Pea’ or a personal favourite - the ‘Milo Lounge’…

…feel like heading back into town, you’re not far away, here’s the view of the Old Cathedral from a flat nearby…

…Like much of Liverpool, there’s always an alternative to the ‘Old’ in the city’s ‘New’ and the Metropolitan Cathedral is no different - just off Hope Street, another great road for eating and drinking - it boasts a drastically different yet equally impressive silhouette to the original…

…carry on working your way into the centre and you’ll find plenty more to keep your eye on. A visit to Bold Street is a MUST and likewise, be sure to check out the friendly and trendy ‘Bold Street Coffee’…

….As the day draws to close, a diverse range of clubs, restaurants and bars kick into action - sure to keep you going well into the night - we ate at Hanover Street Social (http://www.hanoverstreetsocial.co.uk), drank at Santa Chupitos (http://www.santachupitos.com) and partied at Alma de Cuba (http://www.alma-de-cuba.com) - one of the best looking interiors in town…

…With only one weekend to explore the ins and outs of such an exiting and lively city, Liverpool has so much more to offer…in the meantime, we hope this is enough to keep you going - LONG LIVE LIVERPOOL.
